Nirayavagga ⧸ The Downward Course

  1. Abhūtavādī nirayaṃ upeti yo cāpi katvā na karomīti cāhHe goes to hell,
  2. Kāsāvakaṇṭhā bahavo pāpadhammā asaññatAn ochre robe tied round their necks,
  3. Seyye ayoguḷo bhutto tatto aggisikhūpamBetter to eat an iron ball
  4. Cattāri ṭhānāni naro pamattFour things befall the heedless man
  5. Apuññalābho ca gatī ca pāpikA wealth of demerit, an evil destination,
  6. Kuso yathā duggahito hatthamevānukantatJust as sharp-bladed grass,
  7. Yaṃ kiñci sithilaṃ kammaṃ saṃkiliṭṭhaṃ ca yaṃ vataAny slack act,
  8. Kayirā ce kayirāthenaṃ daḷhamenaṃ parakkamIf somethings to be done,
  9. Akataṃ dukkataṃ seyyo pacchā tapati dukkataIts better to leave a misdeed
  10. Nagaraṃ yathā paccantaṃ guttaṃ santarabāhiraLike a frontier fortress,
  11. Alajjitāye lajjanti lajjitāye na lajjarAshamed of whats not shameful,
  12. Abhaye bhayadassino bhaye cābhayadassinSeeing danger where there is none,
  13. Avajje vajjamatino vajje cāvajjadassinImagining error where there is none,
  14. Vajjaṃ ca vajjato ñatvā avajjaṃ ca avajjatBut knowing error as error,
