Nagavagga ⧸ The Elephant

  1. Ahaṃ nāgo va saṅgāme cāpāto patitaṃ saraI — like an elephant in battle,
  2. Dantaṃ nayanti samitiṃ dantaṃ rājā bhirūhatThe tamed is the one
  3. Varamassatarā dantā ājānīyā ca sindhavExcellent are tamed mules,
  4. Na hi etehi yānehi gaccheyya agataṃ disaFor not by these mounts could you go
  5. Dhanapālako nāma kuñjaro kaṭukappabhedano dunnivārayThe tusker, Dhanapalaka,
  6. Middhī yadā hoti mahagghaso ca niddāyitā samparivattasāyWhen torpid & over-fed,
  7. Idaṃ pure cittamacāri cārikaBefore, this mind went wandering
  8. Appamādaratā hotha sacittamanurakkhathDelight in heedfulness.
  9. Sace labhetha nipakaṃ sahāyaIf you gain a mature companion —
  10. No ce labhetha nipakaṃ sahāyaIf you dont gain a mature companion —
  11. Ekassa caritaṃ seyyGoing alone is better,
  12. Atthamhi jātamhi sukhā sahāyA blessing: friends when the need arises.
  13. Sukhā matteyyatā loke atho petteyyatā sukhA blessing in the world: reverence to your mother.
  14. Sukhaṃ yāva jarā sīlaṃ sukhā saddhā patiṭṭhitA blessing into old age is virtue.
